Don O'Neal
Don's song s have created a buzz in the community around Rochester, New York,
with WDYN independent radio station playing his music in there prime time slot.
I have also received airplay with KPFK radio in Woodland California, KAXE FM 89,
Impact radio at Michigan University, CHRW FM 94.9, in Ontario Canada, and SIRIUS
Satellite radio. My music has been described as Laid-back and relaxed, a cross
between Buffet and Chesney .
As far back as I can remember I have loved music. I can t remember a time in
my life when I didn t play and sing Said Don. The family picture album has a
picture of him at three years old holding a toy guitar and singing his heart out.
My mother was my inspiration and the musician in the family she played piano and
guitar. She taught me to play and we spent many hours with old gospel hymns and
country ballads .
Growing up, all Don s friends were musicians who couldn t wait for school to let
out so they could jam. I was the song writer in the group, Someone would through
out an idea and I would run with it. We played the songs I wrote right along with the
current hits on the radio. By the time we were teenagers we all had motorcycles
and if we weren t singing, playing and making up songs, we were ridding. Those are still
my true loves today, music and motorcycles .
Don always wanted to be a country entertainer and never thought of having any other job.
He started playing and singing with local bands and entering songwriting contest in his
early twenties. Don sung on a local television program for a while and recorded some
demos in Nashville. Funny how life turns out. No one told me you can t have a family
and a musical career at the same time, so I wound up working for the Federal Prison System
for twenty- five years. During those years song writing became my escape, my stress
reliever. Writing and singing about things I saw and experienced on a daily basis helped
me cope with my surroundings and keep my life in perspective .
Today Don is retired and devoted full time to music, covering the classic country songs
of Nelson, Jones, Jennings, Cash, Coe, and others. I love traditional country music, both
old and new Don said. This is clearly evident as he moves about his audience singing the
current top 40 charts of Toby Keith, Kenny Chessney, Gary Allen, and Josh Turner.
