GUITAR NOTEBOOK is a progressionof moods, styles and instrumentation
that begins with a Celtic-flavored acoustic instrumental then moves
through folk music and folk-flavored acoustic jazz.
The album progresses to electric guitar, bass and drums featuring
jazz-rock, rhythm and blues and rock, then closing with a moody
country blues.
GUITAR NOTEBOOK includes 4 original instrumentals
and was recorded live and in studios.

Liner Notes

Highlands - Echos of a trip I'll never forget to the United Kingdom at the end of the 1980's...a lingering June twilight near midnight... somewhere in the north of Scotland...my heritage...memories and sounds of crickets drifting on the wind...

Lazin’ In My Sleep - Junior year in High School...it's 1968, and the kid down the hall plays guitar...fingerpicks... someone has a tape recorder, and for a year or so the two of us are a band... dreaming...in the wake of Mason Williams: John Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas thinks about recording us... it never happens...

Jersey Thursday - A favorite Donovan song from those same hopeful days....unsung heroes...

Ghost Riders In The Sky - I'm six or seven years old and Vaughn Monroe sings mysteriously through the earphone of my boyhood crystal radio set...what if this really happened?

Could This Be J.T. - This J.T. was a college friend, the other guy "down the  hall" with a guitar...thumbpick only, no fingerpicks...another step in the learning curve... late nights in the tunnels where the natural reverb sang... jams and plans...this, years later...

April Flowers - When the student is ready...a month before graduation  the guy 'down the hall', a year ahead and already out in the world, is studying classical guitar with Stanley Watson, a resident phenomenon...1973..."sooner or later you will take lessons from him..."  And I did...this, from that rainfall...

Song For My Father - 1979...Jonathan Swift's in  Boston...Danny Gatton and Buddy Emmonds...unbelievably fast and furious... how can anyone play like that?...fifteen years later and I'm taking a turn behind the wheel...it's a different car... spent an hour on the phone with Horace Silver...he is delighted other people still want to record his song...

Help Me - We record the second 'band practice'...1993...

Figure It Out - Wanna make a record?...we go to a studio and promptly fill up 14 out of 16 tracks...I get bogged down composing the solo and all the fills...months pass and I buy an 8-track tape recorder... do it yourself at home  becomes a tutorial...but I like how it turns out.. thanks Danny...

99 Year Blues - Live...audience noise somehow a spooky background to this weird story set in some nameless disjointed time... a guy in the crowd...he has a beer...takes notice of the band: three guys on stage...guitar, a bass, drums... he yells Hendrix! Hendrix!... and I wonder if he is listening..............................
